Student SEL Data Reflection Protocol Student perspective is essential for understanding school data and making equitable, inclusive, and culturally responsive decisions. This tool presents a student-led, structured process for students to reflect on data in partnership with adults, to observe trends and discuss ideas for improvement of SEL implementation. |
||
The purpose of this protocol is to better understand the process leading a particular outcome, and identify potential breakdown points where we should focus our improvement efforts. |

Driver Diagram Generation Protocol The purpose of this protocol is to generate a shared “theory of action” to drive a team’s improvement efforts and ultimately achieve the aim. |
Focus Area 3 Continuous Improvement Connections
There are a variety of data sources that can be used to continuously improve how SEL is implemented for students.
Focus Area 1A: Continuous Improvement Connections
The SEL team has an important role in leading schoolwide SEL. The team can be strengthened over time using continuous improvement techniques.
Focus Area 1b: Continuous Improvement Connections
The core tool used in this guide is the Schoolwide SEL Implementation Rubric. The rubric provides an overview of a systemic approach to schoolwide SEL, and teams can review it to get a sense of what SEL looks like when it is coordinated across classrooms, the school, homes, and the community.
Focus Area 2: Continuous Improvement Connections
A safe and supportive school climate is an important factor for improving academic, behavioral, and mental health outcomes for students (Thapa, 2013).
In addition to driving overall schoolwide SEL implementation, PDSA improvement cycles also provide a powerful structure for quickly testing specific innovative strategies to support SEL.
Establish a structured, ongoing process to collect, reflect on, and use implementation and outcome data to inform school-level decisions and drive improvements to SEL implementation.
Continuously Improve Schoolwide SEL Implementation
Use the PDSA cycle to drive high-quality schoolwide SEL implementation.
